Hungarian treats exact objects differently than inexact objects.
Egy almát eszek.*
I eat an apple.
Well which apple was it.
Was it any ol’ apple? Then we say “I eat AN apple” and in Hungarian we use the indefinite article and the indefinite conjugation of the verb: Egy almát ESZEK.
Was it the specific apple you were forbidden to eat? Then we say “I eat THE apple,” and in Hungarian we use the definite article and the definite conjugation of the verb: Az almát ESZEM.
* This particular Anki card reflects the popular usage. Do not give me a hard time if your grammar book insists on a different ending here because technically “eszik” (he eats) is an “-ik” verb. The point of this post is that the Hungarian mind differentiates between the definiteness and indefiniteness of the object.
